BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS
Bandhna Bedi, Student Advisor noted how far we've come with the opening plan and that being this close to fully open is a glimmer of hope. She shared an encounter she had with military recruiters showing up at her front door and how surprised and uncomfortable she was. She said they had also attempted contact through social media page, and she felt this was an invasion of her privacy.

Kai Hinch, Student Advisor shared recruiters also reached out to him on social media, very casually commenting on photo and trying to start a conversation. He said regarding school before reopening that teachers warned it may be hectic, but the transition was smooth. He noted that students are tired, but things are going good.

Isabel Vergara Ramos, Student Advisor thanked the staff for a smooth transition to in person/hybrid. She shared it is nice to see the seniors excited, getting their caps and gowns and looking forward to in-person graduation ceremonies.

Cerelia Vu, Student Advisor said she is ecstatic for graduation and prom.

Ritika Khanal, Student Advisor said it is exciting to have an actual graduation this year. She said her teachers have been super innovative and impressed by her AP Chemistry class. She asked the Board to consider approving field trips next year, in particular the Journalism National Convention that they are trying to plan for next year.

Director Noble shared he had attended a WSSDA regional meeting and a student, who is a Lummi tribe member, read her poem after the land acknowledgement. It brought to his attention that a land acknowledgement is only a tiny step in the process to address the long-term issues that still affect Native Americans today and the disadvantages they still face.

Director McMurray congratulated Ritika, who is one of the Hawkeye's co-editors this year, for being selected to represent the state of Washington at the Al Neuharth Free Spirit Conference. She said she couldn't be more proud of Ritika.

Director Chase said she appreciated the conversation regarding the land acknowledgement noting it is a small step in a long journey as board and country. She shared the Legislature had passed many bills, and she will be attending meetings to hear the implications. Policy considerations proposals were shared with the Board. She recommended support of the proposal to attracting, recruiting and retaining qualified diverse Board members and said she will share more complete list after Thursday.

Director Katims shared an idea for a resolution to make June Pride Month. She asked the Board to consider Pride month.

Director Kilgore said she is in favor of a resolution for Pride Month. She thanked the community for supporting kids by approving the capital levy noting it fits nicely with goal to open up five days for all students that want it in the fall. She shared in person graduations are so important to kids and families, and she is thrilled to offer those.

SUPERINTENDENT'S COMMENTS

Dr. Balderas said he will work with Director Katims and Director Chase to prepare a resolution for consideration at the next meeting. He shared the district will be sending a fall intent form out to families this week and also communication to families to expect it.
