Single Reading, approve an Interlocal Agreement with Verdant Health to provide a Trauma Informed Prevention and Intervention Program at Alderwood Middle School, Resolution No. 17-12.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the Board approve an Interlocal Agreement with Verdant Health to provide a Trauma Informed Prevention and Intervention Program at Alderwood Middle School.
Background
Students are coming to school with exposure to trauma in their lives – suffering from abuse (physical, emotional, and sexual), neglect (physical and emotional), and household dysfunction (mental illness, incarcerated relative, domestic violence, substance abuse, and divorce). We plan on creating a proactive and responsive plan to help support students by establishing relationships and help align them with the resources they need to achieve their goals in school and life.
This grant is unique in that it is seeking to integrate various vested parties in a student’s life in order to holistically support kids both proactively (student leadership; whole school assemblies and speakers; community development; student and family workshops; mindfulness workshops; staff resiliency, neuroplasticity, and ACEs training) and responsively (via student mediation program; coordination of community supports; resiliency training for all students and staff; alternative discipline approaches; restorative justice practices).
The research is clear - there is a fundamental causal relationship between experiencing trauma and the probability/risk of every adult health concern ranging from cancer to incarceration. The CDC and over 50 other reputable national studies have indicated that the #1 most influential proactive support and the most impactful mitigating support is the development of multiple positive relationships for every child. Resiliency is a product of those relationships not a stand-alone social-emotional skill. Through this grant, we will pay for 0.2 FTE of our Dean of Students position, staff professional development, a peer mediation program, student leadership opportunities, parent workshops, and inspirational resources for our students to help our students develop resiliency. We will track the data and put together a curriculum that could be used by other middle schools in the district.
